The IDR Group has put on a number of conferences in different parts of the world since its launch at a Reception in the Houses of Parliament in April 2008.

Each of these conferences has been staged in conjunction with leading bodies in the academic, professional or arbitral fields.

The conference themes have been on the broad topic of international dispute resolution: the specific theme for each country being chosen on the basis of local advice.

The conferences held so far have been in London, Ankara, Cairo, Beijing, Washington D.C. and Istanbul.

The Group’s most recent conferences were held in Istanbul.

In October 2017 the Group joined with Istanbul’s Altinbas University and the Istanbul Bar Association in a conference the theme of which was –

“Litigation, Arbitration and Mediation in the Resolution of International Disputes”

The venue was the Conference Hall of the Caglayan Court House, Istanbul. The Courthouse is said to be the largest in Europe.

Some 250 delegates attended to hear more than twenty speakers from China, England, France, the Netherlands, Poland, Turkey and the United States discussing the use of litigation, arbitration and mediation in the resolution of international disputes.

The Conference was introduced by Dr. Serhat Eskiyörük, Assistant Professor at Altinbas University, and Anthony Connerty of the IDR Group.

The first session looked at a selection of problems in Energy, Climate Change, Third Party Funding and Third Parties in Arbitration. Chaired by London solicitor Peter Ashford of Fox Williams, the speakers included Dr. Pierce Riemer, Director General of the World Petroleum Council.

The theme of Session 2 was solutions provided by International Dispute Resolution Organisations. Topics included WIPO, ICSID, the PCA and the ICCA-Queen Mary Task Force on Third-Party Funding.

Gary Born, partner in Wilmer Hale’s London office, spoke by video on Bilateral Arbitration Treaties.

The first of the afternoon sessions dealt with solutions provided by international commercial arbitration institutions. Chaired by Izmir lawyer Cinar Kologlu, the delegates heard from speakers from China, Poland, France and Turkey.

The fourth session consisted of a Roundtable Discussion: “Litigation, Arbitration or Mediation?”

The Keynote Speaker was Judge Hakan Öztatar, Head of Mediation Department of Ministry of Justice, Ankara. The Judge delivered a fascinating and impassioned speech supporting the use of mediation as a means of resolving disputes.

Other speakers in the session were Asli Yılmaz, ICC Counsel on the ICC Expedited Procedure Provisions and Şule Uluç Senior Associate at Herguner Bilgen Özeke speaking on factors playing a role in determining the appropriate dispute resolution method.

IDR Group member Serhat Eskiyörük was instrumental in the staging of the October 2017 Istanbul Conference.

In November 2019 the Group joined with Istanbul law firm, Hergüner Bilgen & Ozeke and SYZ Private Banking in an “Art and Law” atelier. The event was staged at the Esma Sultan Mansion in Istanbul.

The atelier aimed to offer a discussion forum on the salient legal aspects of creating, investing in, managing, and displaying works of fine art through the participation of art lovers, collectors of art, specialists, and representatives from art galleries and art museums. Discussions included methods for dealing with the settlement of art-related conflicts by dispute resolution systems such as mediation and arbitration.
