Rt. Hon Lord Anderson of Swansea DL
Donald Anderson, Barrister, has long specialised in foreign affairs. He entered the Senior Branch of the U.K. Foreign Service in 1960.
He was one of the longest-serving Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom. He held the office of Member of Parliament for Swansea East between 1974 and 2005, and from 1997 to 2005 he chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Commons.
He was invested as a Privy Counsellor in 2001.
It was announced on his retirement from Parliament at the 2005 general election that he would be created a life peer. In June 2005 he was created Baron Anderson of Swansea. In the House of Lords he currently sits on the nearest equivalent to the Commons’ Foreign Affairs Committee, namely the House of Lords’ European Union Sub - Committee (which covers the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Ministry of Defence and the Department for International Development).
He has chaired many international committees in the defence and Commonwealth fields, and has been decorated by a number of countries:
Legion d’ Honneur (France)
Commanders’ Cross (Germany)
Foreign Ministers’ Medal (Slovakia)
Officer’s Cross, Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary
Lord Anderson is a former member of what is now known as Lamb Chambers. He joined Chambers in 1969 and was the PrivateSecretary to the Rt. Hon Sam Silkin, then the Attorney General, from 1974 to 1979.
